Macedonian airports report surge in traffic and aircraft movements

TAV Airports Holding reported that, according to the statistical data by the operator of the Macedonian Airports, TAV Macedonia, the number of transported passengers via both Macedonian airports in August 2013 increased by 20.5 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Skopje Alexander the Great Airport welcomed a total of 115.023 passengers, marking an increase of 23.1 per cent, whereas the number of passengers via Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport amounted to 16.463. The total number of passengers at both airports amounted to 131.486 persons.

In the first eight months of 2013, there was an increase of 17.5 per cent compared to the previous year, with 732.831 passengers transported in total.

The number of flights (aircraft movements) increased as well by almost 10 per cent, with a total of 8.489 movements on the records at both airports since January. The increase in August alone is much more significant, with 16.2 per cent more movements seen compared to the same month last year.

These numbers derive from the increase of flight frequencies of Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Croatia Airlines and flydubai.

Additionally, during the summer season, charter flights were organised a few times per week to vacation destinations Antalya and Izmir in Turkey with Corendon and SunExpress, as well as several charters to Catania, Sicily. Passengers also demonstrated continued interest in the Wizz Air routes.

The most popular destination from Skopje Airport in August were Istanbul, Vienna, Zurich, London and Malme. Between January and August, the top five destinations were Istanbul, Vienna, Zurich, London and Ljubljana. The most popular airlines since the beginning of the year have been Wizz Air, followed by Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Pegasus Airlines and Adria Airways.
