Aegean Airlines has reported a 22 per cent rise in international traffic, carrying in total 1.3 million passengers during the May-July 2013 period – 235,000 more compared to the same period in 2012.
This positive trend continued in July, with international traffic increasing by 19 per cent, to 508,000 passengers.
The airline has attributed this surge to the addition of 11 new destinations and extra international flights both from Athens and from various regions.
There has also been a 19 to 41 per cent increase in the traffic at the bases of Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Rhodes.
The smaller bases (Corfu, Kos and Kalamata) with one aircraft operating reported a total increase of 58 per cent for international traffic.
Managing director, Aegean Airlines, Dimitris Gerogiannis stated: "The dynamic course of international traffic this summer lays the foundations for further growth in 2014. The synergies and economies of scale that will arise from the acquisition of Olympic Air, when the procedure is completed with the approval of the European Commission, will ensure and accelerate our potential for the future. The presentation of the new Aegean flight schedule for 2014 will take place in early September."
