Aegean Airlines announces boost in results for H1 of 2014 http://ttgbalkans.com/transport/item/1063-aegean-airlines-announces-boost-in-results-for-h1-of-2014.html http://ttgbalkans.com/transport/item/1063-aegean-airlines-announces-boost-in-results-for-h1-of-2014.html Aegean Airlines announces boost in results for H1 of 2014

Aegean Airlines has reported improved results for the first half of 2014, resulting from the benefits of its network expansion and from cost synergies with Olympic Air.

Consolidated revenue increased by eight per cent to €388.6 millio, compared to the combined revenue of both companies in 2013. Consolidated pre-tax earnings reached €22 million from €7.2 million and after-tax earnings rose to €16 million from €6.9 million in 2013.

It should be noted that due to seasonality the first half is traditionally said to be the weakest semester in performance.

Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air carried 4.3 million passengers in the first half of 2014, 16 per cent more than the previous year, achieving further improvement on load factor to 76 per cent from 74 per cent, despite the high number of new destinations launched during the period.

In June 2014, the company reached a historic milestone by exceeding one million monthly passengers for the first time. Traffic in the domestic network surged by 19 per cent, driven mainly by lower fares which boosted demand for main markets as well smaller island destinations. International traffic out of the eight aircraft bases rose by 13 per cent, with Athens registering a higher growth rate of 17 per cent, as the market recovered for the first time since 2008.

Managing director, Aegean Airlines, Dimitris Gerogiannis commented: "Olympic Air synergies are gradually maturing bringing unit cost improvements and increased flows from connectivity. Our investment in incoming leisure and tourism over the last five years now brings tangible results for Aegean. This is so, despite the significant rise in competitive capacity to our market as well as new source market related challenges faced in Russia and Ukraine.

He added: "We are benefiting from scale economies and network development and we will continue to gradually but consistently pursue this strategy while making new investments in quality and competitiveness as most recently with our decision to take delivery of seven brand new Airbus A320 aircraft in 2015/2016."

The airline also witnessed a 19 per cent jump in numbers at Rhodes International Airport during the same period, welcoming 96,038 passengers from 80,698 during the same period last year.

Athens International Airport (AIA) recently scooped Air Transport Research Society's (ATRS) Top European Small-Medium Size Airport Efficiency Excellence Award in its annual benchmarking study of commercial airports spanning Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and North America.

Based on an in depth analysis of airport cost and revenue data, the study assesses the productivity and efficiency of almost 200 airports.

Commenting on the occasion was CEO, AIA, Yiannis Paraschis: "We are very pleased and indeed honoured that Athens International Airport has been distinguished by the esteemed Air Transport Research Society as the most efficient airport in its category in the performance benchmarking.

Paraschis continued: "Thanks to its solid basis, AIA has managed, despite adversities, to address significant market challenges, protect its business model and continue to deliver substantial value to all stakeholders and the Greek economy.

"Targeted efforts towards minimising traffic losses and revenue streams, in combination with operating cost optimisation, have been key to that end and allowed AIA to post healthy results, without compromising its value for money services. At a turning point of strong recovery at present, we believe that what makes an organisation capable of weathering a storm and come out even more efficient and effective, is clearly its ability to continuously change and adapt," he concluded.

Aegean Airlines breaks passenger traffic record for June http://ttgbalkans.com/transport/item/1026-aegean-airlines-breaks-passenger-traffic-record-for-june.html http://ttgbalkans.com/transport/item/1026-aegean-airlines-breaks-passenger-traffic-record-for-june.html Aegean Airlines breaks passenger traffic record for June

Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air's overall passenger traffic increased by 21 per cent in June of 2014, reaching 1,085,210 passengers, according to their latest figures.

This is the first time in the company's history that the monthly airline passenger traffic has exceeded one million passengers. June's increase reinforced the trend of the first six months of 2014 for the entire network, which also rose by 16 per cent, with a total of 4.3 million passengers.

It was also noted that as a result of the lower fare policy for the first time in the last five years, the increasing trend concerns domestic traffic as well, giving a 19 per cent boost for June and for the whole year. At the same time, in the international market, in June the company increased its operations from all Greek bases by 23 per cent.

Athens demonstrated particularly positive developments with a rise of 22 per cent in international traffic in June. The passenger traffic surge is attributed to the launch of new destinations such as Zurich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Birmingham, Hamburg, Marseille, Nantes, Catania, Abu Dhabi, Beirut, Amman, Izmir and Smyrna, as well as to the traffic rise in traditional destinations. Furthermore, the bases of Heraklion, Thessaloniki and Rhodes showed an increase of 47 per cent, 11 per cent and 22 per cent respectively in June.

CEO, Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, Dimitris Gerogiannis said: "The development of the network with 17 new destinations, as well as the frequent and improved internal connections are now beginning to operate in a positive light, especially for the Athens base. Similarly, the development strategy of the seven other Greek hubs are also equally successful."

Aegean Airlines recently received the Corporate Social Responsibility Award for 2014 by the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) as part of the 2014 ACCI Awards to enterprises and entrepreneurs.

The airline was given this particularly important distinction in recognition of its strategic decision to systematically invest in corporate responsibility. In this context, the company implemented once again this year a series of actions aimed at highlighting Greece's cultural heritage, developing tourism, promoting and reinforcing sports, adopting eco-friendly practices, and supporting vulnerable groups in society.

The award ceremony was held recently, at the Athens Concert Hall.

Chairman, Aegean Airlines, Theodoros Vasilakis said: "Indeed, social responsibility actions have been, since the early days of the company, an important and integral part of the company's culture, and our activity in this area has been ceaseless. Allow me to say that we would rather keep a low profile in this field. We are committed to continue, with a new impetus, to plan and implement actions and initiatives aiming at always being close to the Greek society and state. I would like to thank the chairman and the BoD of ACCI, because this distinction gives us new strength and endurance, qualities which are always useful."
