Bulgaria Air recently announced that in July, Sofia Airport served a total of 362, 800 passengers at the two airport terminals, resulting in an increase of nine per cent annually.

Bulgaria Air and other companies operating from Terminal 2 were preferred by 68 per cent of the passengers travelling on international and domestic routes. The remaining 32 per cent of the total amount of passengers passed through Terminal 1.

Catering to ever-increasing demand, as of October 1, Qatar Airways is set to enhance flight frequencies to Bucharest (Romania) and Sofia (Bulgaria).

Currently offering its Bucharest-Sofia linked route five times a week, the carrier will be introducing two additional frequencies, bringing the total number of flights to seven per week.

With the addition of the two new frequencies, the route will offer an additional 48 seats in business class and 360 in economy class per week, representing an increase of 408 seats.

Group CEO, Qatar Airways, HE Akbar Al Baker commented on the news: "Bucharest-Sofia has been an extremely popular route for those travelling to and from Europe. The additional two frequencies will help meet the demand the airline has for this particular route. Europe in particular, is an extremely popular destination for a number of our passengers, especially those in East Asia and we are pleased to be able to continue to offer more options to those looking to travel with us and enjoy our five-star service.

Popular destinations to and from Bucharest and Sofia include Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, Dubai, Melbourne, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, Maldives, Nairobi and Delhi.

In a bid to improve the customer experience, Sofia Airport, Bulgaria, recently commenced renovation works on the flooring in the public lounge of its Terminal 1 Departures.

The renovation project was inaugurated on August 8 and is due to run until September 22, 2014. Repair works are due to be completed in three phases without disrupting the operational function of the passenger terminal building.

Throughout the duration of this project, the airport and flight information desk will be temporarily relocated to the western section of the Departures lounge. Adding to this, a dedicated corridor will grant visitors access to the ticket sale desks.

Following an extensive two-year project, 'Tourinnovation,' the village of Stambolovo, Bulgaria is gearing up to welcome a brand new Tourist Information Centre (TIC) at the end of July.

The construction of the building is complete and TIC Stambolovo has been furnished with up-to-date equipment.

Several thematic exhibitions will inform visitors of interesting facts and events taking place. 'Tourist Attractions and Landmarks' is to display the cultural and environmental sites, local festivals, customs and traditions; 'Along the Ecological Trails in the Eastern Rhodopes' will highlight the biodiversity of the Eastern Rhodopes; 'The Magic of the Stone' will showcase the area's minerals and semi-precious stones; and 'Cultural Traditions and Customs in the Villages in the Municipality of Stambolovo' will exhibit regional artefacts and costumes.

The brand new centre will additionally offer vital information concerning the destination, including routes, local sites and attractions. It will additionally grant tourists the opportunity to book room nights.

These services will also be available online and at two centres located within the municipality. All three centres are electronically linked together and are equipped with kiosks, where the visitors can browse for information.

Opening new gateways, Turkish Airlines recently announced Varna, Bulgaria as its 252nd destination.

Round-trip flights between Istanbul and Varna are to be operated as Istanbul–Varna–Constanza–Istanbul, twice weekly and as Istanbul–Constanza–Varna–Istanbul twice weekly, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Introductory round trip fares are available from Istanbul to Varna at affordable prices. Additionally, for the first six months of operation to the new destination, a special offer for Miles&Smiles members is provided, with a reduction in the miles needed to redeem either award tickets or upgrades.

Sunny Beach, a seaside resort on Bulgaria's Black Sea Coast, recently welcomed its first organised group of 360 tourists, marking the launch of the tourist season.

The tourists travelled to Bulgaria under the Union of Austrian Pensioners programme for their Spring Meetings. They were welcomed with traditional bread and salt, and a cup of brandy at the Evrika hotel as well as a traditional folklore programme.

The holiday was organised by the Union of Austrian Pensioners through tour operator, SeniorenReisen and its Bulgarian partner Destination Tourist Services.

As for holiday itinerary, the tourist group will visit the town of Kotel and the surroundings of the village of Zheravna; will take a one-day tour of Sozopol-Ropotamo; will visit the city of Bourgas; and will enjoy a trip to the salt works of Pomorie. Adding to this, the tourists will have the opportunity to experience wine tasting in the Black Sea Gold wine cellar in Pomorie and each week the Austrian guests will attend the Bourgas Opera.

"The Austrians are fascinated by the Bulgarian hospitality, folklore, hotels and services and most of all by the very delicious Bulgarian food. It is not by chance that last year Sunny Beach was declared as the most successful tourist destination," noted director, SeniorenReisen, Otto Schell.
This is the second consecutive year that the Union of Austrian Pensioners is sending its members to Sunny Beach.

Throughout the month of February, Sofia Airport, Bulgaria, recorded a nine per cent growth in the number of serviced passengers, compared to the corresponding period last year.

February 2014 welcomed 258,709 passengers, 21,000 more than last year. Also during this month, the number of planes taking off and landing climbed to 2,977, a 5.2 per cent increase from 2013.

The summer flight schedule for Sofia Airport is to begin on March 30, 2014, and is to offer convenient direct connections to 47 international destinations served by 22 airlines.

Located on the stand of MyDanube Travel in Hall 2.2, the Danube Competence Center (DCC) will be presenting its web platform, as well as various initiatives promoting the Danube as a travel destination with a wide range of attractions. The focus is to be on culture-oriented trips along the Danube Wine Route and the Roman Emperors' Route.

Under the heading of 'A joint cultural heritage along the Danube', a two-hour tour will give visitors an impression of the scenery and the geographical, cultural and historical diversity of the regions along the Danube. On the eight stands hosted by the Danube countries experts will be providing advice on specific tourism products and services. They will also have information about business opportunities and developments in tourism on the river that unifies eastern and western Europe.

On Friday, March 7, at the ITB Destination Days in Hall 7.1a, a forum will be taking place with high-profile guests. Participants will discuss 'Marketing a joint cultural heritage' and how cultural routes along the Danube can provide a model for cross-border tourism and stimulate socio-economic progress. Among other topics, the participants will be discussing how important tourism is for maintaining and supporting regional culture as well as joint marketing strategies and activities. Furthermore, the forum will highlight how culture-oriented trips can help to secure the support of tourism players for cross-border cooperation and to open up new opportunities for tourism companies and international operators at the relevant travel destinations.
